Loving Your Dog Is A Community

Loving your dog is a community

There are many things that bring all kinds of people together to build communities. One example of a community is the world of dog lovers. This group can be considered a community because, dog lovers do many activities with other dog people. They go to dog parks, pet stores, hikes, dog shows, and many more. This group stays together because they all have the love for their dogs in common. Almost all dog lovers will have pictures of there dogs with them at all times and be more than willing to tell you all about there dogs whether you want them to or not. All the people in the dog lovers community all share the love they have for their canine companions, they have a need to spend as much time with or talking about the dogs as possible, as well as most dog people have strong feelings againsts things such as animal abuse, dog fights, and so on. The difficulties that this community faces is; that not everyone is a dog lover so some people will commplain about them having their pets with them in public places. Also another difficulty may be that there are not enough dog parks or dog friendly apartments, or homes for rent. As a dog lover myself I know it is difficult to find somewhere to rent because I own a dog that is over 25 pounds. But for the most part I dont feel like there are too difficulties when you are part of this community.

I chose to write about the dog lover community because I am very much in love with my dog as well. I have a siberian husky wolf hybrid named Sierra. She will be 2 years old on the 4th of July. She is my life, the best part of my day is curling up on the couch with her. This is a community that I want to be apart of because dog people are almost always very friendly and open people. You will find people from every end of the spectum in this community and they can all relate because they all have a great love for their furry canine friends.

Writers Choice

For my choice piece I chose to use one of my blog posts. The blog post I chose is the one with the topic of different communities. I chose this because I wrote about being in the dog lover community. I may self have a dog whom I spoil rotten and take every where. So because I am a member of the dog lover community it was the most fun for me to write and I had the most passion for the topic.

How communities create individuals

All people are unique; they all have different interests and hobbies that help make them who they are and what they are known for. Sometimes people will gather in groups with others who share the same interests or hobbies as they do; these groups can all be considered small communities. Some examples of what some of these communities are sports team, people of the same ethnic background, people with body art and piercings, animal lovers, people who share the same religion and many more. Communities give people a sense of self-identity and the opportunity to be around people with the same interests or hobbies.
There are all kinds of communities in the world; you have your sports communities, religion communities, and the list goes on. One community that has both negative and positive effects on the people apart of it is the body art community, otherwise known as the tattooed and pierced people of the world. One of the positives of being a member of the body art community is that you are free to express yourself in an artistic manner. Some people get words or quotes that are encouraging, or very meaning full tattooed on them. Others get portraits of loved ones or pets that have pasted, or that have made a big impact on their lives. Then there are the ones who just enjoy the art factor of tattoos and get paintings, Chinese art, tribal art, and any other forms of art that the like. The positive about piercings is similar to the ones for tattoos. There are hundreds of different places and ways to get pierced, as well as many reasons. Some people get them for personal pleasure, appearance, and then there are the ones who do it because they enjoy the pain. Some of the most common piercings you see are ears, nose, lip, tongue, belly buttons, and eye brows. Recently people have started getting surface and dermal piercings; these are more rare and individual than the more common piercings. In the article The Amish Charter, by John A. Hostler; it talks about how the members of the Amish communities are not allowed to wear bright colors, they are all suppose to wear plain black clothing. And it cannot be reviling at all. So a benefit of being in the body art community is that you have the right to dress however you want, as well as have whatever you want tattooed or pierced. Those are just a very positives to being a member of the body are community.
One of the negatives of being a member of this community is that it is a fairly expensive hobby to have. Most tattoos cost between 100 and 1000 dollars; it all depends on the size, detail, and whether you get it done in color or black and grey. Another negative part of having tattoos and piercings is that some people look down upon you just because of your appearance. It can also make it very difficult to get a job. A lot of people think that if you have tattoos you are going to be rebellious, unclean, or even a fugitive. The reason people have these impressions is because bikers, gang members, and people in prison all seem to have tattoos and tend to be more on the rebellious and unreliable. But what you don’t see is how people in China have been getting tattooed for many years, and it is for religious reasons not to because they want to be rebels. My step dad used to have a lot of facial piercings, and in my interview with him he stated that before he removed his piercings it was hard for him to get a job, he was started at, and many people avoided him because of the way he looked and what they assumed.
So again there are many kinds of communities in the world that unite all types of different people. There are also many negative and positive effects to being involved in a community. The benefits are that you can express yourself the way you want and be a true individual. A negative is that people who are not a part of your community might look down on you because your interests, style, or opinions are opposite of theirs.

Awareness of Audience

To show my writing for an audience skills I chose to use the second essay that was assigned. This essay was about the different communities that affect you and the people around you. I chose to write about the tattoo and pierced community. I feel that I did a good job of writing to the audience becasue I used language that was relateable and made sure to use good explinations of the ideas I was writing about. Over all I feel like this paper was the most reader friendly than any of the other papers I wrote.

Challenged Traditions

The world is full of tradition, holidays, family events, food, communication, beliefs, and celebrations. Some traditions effect people on a daily basis and others only come around once a year. There are traditions for the children and traditions for the adults in the world; no one is left out when it comes to traditions. In order to really understand traditions you need to know what a tradition is, the definition of a tradition is; “The passing down of elements of a culture from generation to generation.”
One tradition that seems to stick out to me is Christmas. This is a tradition that has many different meanings to the many people who celebrate it. The most common reason for people to celebrate Christmas is their religious beliefs. It is said that Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Christ. Then there are the people who are not very religious or not religious at all who celebrate Christmas because it is a chance to get together with their family and exchange gifts. Then there are also people who do not celebrate the holiday at all because it is against their beliefs. Due to the fact that there are so many different reasons people celebrate Christmas sometimes confrontation and disagreements arise around Christmas time.
Christmas may have started out as a reason to celebrate the birth of Christ, but it has become an excuse to shower our loved ones with presents. Many other changes have also been made. A new part of the tradition is to decorate your house with colorful lights and to bring a tree into your home and decorate it with lights and ornaments. Another change that had been added to this holiday is the sales on the malls and stores across the nation. Business have learned that because of the vast number of people out buying gifts for their loved ones, that if they have great sales going on they will make a pretty penny. This shows that instead of being celebrated for the original purpose Christmas in now being celebrated as a reason to spend and make money as well as to shower the ones we love with gifts.
These changes have caused some controversy in the religious communities. Some people are upset by the way that Christmas is now being celebrated. They believe that many boundaries have been broken. The definition of Christmas is, “A Christian feast commemorating the birth of Jesus.” This is not how the majorities of the people in the nation celebrate it. They still have a large meal with their families, but the topic of the evening is not normal the birth of Christ. The dinner of discussion is all about work, school, gifts, money, pretty much anything but the birth of Christ. Sometimes this can cause people to be very offended and hurt by the way that their holiday is celebrated because they feel it is part of their identity.
So in conclusion there are many different traditions in the world, many of them are celebrated across the nation. Others are traditions that are celebrated only with in a family or group of friends. The definition of a tradition is, “The passing down of elements of a culture from generation to generation.” So anything that is past down from one generation to the next can be considered a tradition. Christmas is one of the most celebrated and most changed traditions celebrated by people acroos the nation. Many aspects of the holiday have been changed to make it more appealing to children and to make it more profitable.

Revision and Reseeing

To show my revising skills I chose to use the third essay we were assigned. This was the essay about how different traditions have been challenged. I had alot of things going on while I was writing this paper so I read over it mulitple times to ensure I found all my mistakes. The mistakes I did find were run on sentneces, misspelling, and sentences that just did not make sence. I did not have an outsider read it over for me, I normally would have. When you have someone else read over your work with fresh eyes they may spot things you had missed.

We are who we surround ourselves with

There are many things that influence our sense of self identity. It all starts from the time we are born and we continue to change our identity until the day we die. We are surrounded by hundreds of people every day ranging from our family, friends, co-workers, peers, celebrities, and any other people we come into contact with on a daily basis. You control whether you have a good or bad self identity, you can choose to hangout around people who are bad influences on you. Or you can choose to surround yourself with positive and motivating people. You are also affected by how much you let the people around you influence your decisions. There is not just one specific influence that forms a strong self identity but in my opinion, the main influence on a strong sense of self identity is the influence from the people we surround ourselves with.
There is always one person in your life that has more of an influence on you than any other, it may be your mom, dad, best friend, grandparent, or even a boss, or a celebrity who you look up to. Many people would probably say that their parents and close family members are the people who have the most impact on their identity. This could be because from the day you are born they are who you spend most of your time with. Your parents set boundaries for you, as well as teach you how to talk, walk, and all the other little things that help you to be a successful person. Your family also sets your foundation for things such as religion and culture. These are also factors in your identity; some families are very culture orientated or very religious. This can sometimes cause people to go on the same path and have a lot of pride in their religion or culture. Or it could have the opposite effect, and they could feel trapped from having those things pushed upon them as children and they choose to rebel and not be religious at all or have a interest in their culture at all. For the people who grow up not knowing their parents, or just not being raised by them, may look at a grandparent or aunt/uncle as their role model. Not only do these people teach you the basics of being a human being, they are also the ones who are preparing you for adult hood. They send you to school at the age of five to start your education and social skill building. This is where you meet your first teacher who also plays an important role in your identity building because you spend about 5-6hours a day, 5 days a week, and about 7 months a year with them. After sending you to school your parents also push you to get a job so you can learn the meaning of money before you are thrown out into the real world. These are just a few things that your family has in influence on when it comes to yourself identity.
A second group of people that may have a large influence on yourself identity is your friends. When we are in our adolescent years our friends seem to be more knowledgeable than our parents or any other adult in our lives for that matter. Also they are easier for us to relate to so we tend to confide in them over our parents. The people that who you hang out with in high school plays a very large roll in how you turn out. If you surround yourself with teens that are driven and take pride in their school work, you will in turn take more pride in your school work because that is the trend of the group you are associated with. Or you can be involved with the group of teens who thinks partying and being rebellious is the ideal way of life. Often times these are the kids who use drugs and alcohol on a regular basis, have little to no desire to succeed in school, and are often times the ones getting kicked out of school and in trouble with the law. By surrounding yourself with these people you are more likely to fall into the same path and be less motivated in school and more motivated to party and goof off. Not everyone falls into these two categories; there are teens that fall right in the middle. They might go out and party on the weekends but they still have passing grades, and take pride in things such as sports and after school activities as well. When we are young we look to fit in so we will change our values to be in the “popular” crowd. But as we grow out of our adolescence stage of life some people care less about what their friends think and grow into their own category.
Another group of people that may have an influence on yourself identity is your co-workers or peers. We spend a lot of time at work so it is only natural that we change portions of our identity to better fit in and to ensure we work well with the people we are with on a day to day basis. It could be larger changes such as you may have someone who encourages you to do better work and this may help you to develop better work ethic and also build your self esteem and confidence. Or you can be affected negatively. You may have a boss or co-worker who is very negative and constantly telling you that your work is not good enough. This may cause you to be more defensive in the work place, or lower your self esteem from having someone constantly critique what you do in a negative way. Your peers are the people you share classes with. They may have an influence on you by the advice they give you on an assignment, or even if you are working in a group they may give you tips on how to better your study skills which may extend into your everyday life.
People in the public eye may also be an influence on you. Your favorite actor or singer might be someone you really look up to. Some people even go to an extreme, and get surgery to look just like their celebrity idol. Celebrities have their lives under a magnifying glass almost 24/7 so you may think to you self since they drink this kind of coffee I too need to drink this coffee. Or even they may wear a certain brand of clothing so you have to wear that brand of clothing to feel good about yourself. Or they may have a bigger influence on you; maybe or celebrity idol does a lot of charity work in Africa or for cancer. This may inspire you to find ways to make a difference in other people’s lives for the better. And just as a celebrity influence might affect you in a good way they can also have a negative influence on you. You may hear that your idol uses a certain drug, is in a gang, or even are involved in killing people. A lot of things you hear about celebrities is not true so if you feel that you need to commit crimes because your favorite rapper does you need to stop and think because, what they say is just for the entertainment aspect not really how they live their lives.
You can also be the biggest influence on yourself identity. You have the power to choose what it is you do with your life. In order to help ensure that you have a strong self identity is to be proactive; making sure you do everything you can to do the things you want or goals you have get achieved. Also being self motivated; this will help you to get things done in a timely manner and also not rely on other people to make decisions for you. This will help you to be a better employee because you will not have to rely on others to be on you about what you need to get don. You will take it upon yourself to make sure that the job gets done. You are your biggest influence because no one else can make you do anything you don’t want to do. You choose the path you take, there just might be some people how help you along the way.
So in conclusion, there are many aspects that contribute to your sense of self identity. In my opinion the people you surround yourself with have the biggest influence on your identity. Your family is one major influence on you, they set your foundation. From teaching you the basics like talking, walking, and all those little things, to sending you to school to get an education and learn social skills. Your friends also have a large impact on how you turn out. In high school is where the type of people you are going to be is usually determined by the group of people you decide to spend your time with. Then there is your co-workers and peer, these are the people that can make or break you in the work place. You can work with motivating people or have people negatively critiquing everything you do. So this is one of just the many aspects that forms a strong identity, and I believe is the more influential.

Critical Thinking

For my critical thinking piece I chose to use the first essay assigned. This was the essay asking what we thought had the most influnece on someones sence of self-identity. I chose this paper because when I think of critical thinking I think of someone using both common sense and school smarts. I feel as though I used both of those while writing this paper. I said that I thought the people we surround ourselves with is the biggest influence on our self-identities. I feel that way because when you spend alot of time with a group of people or just one person you tend to unheirate some of the same personality traits and interests they have.

Reflection

My name is Christina, and I just turned nineteen years old. I don’t have very many hobbies but the ones I do have pretty much all involve my animals. I have a dog named Sierra, two cats Gina and Delilah, two snakes Beetlejuice and Listerfeen, and I also have a horse named Stormy. I spend a lot of time taking care of all of them. I try to ride my horse a few days every week but living in Washington the weather doesn’t always play nicely. My career goal is to someday open my own doggy day care. I am going to get my grooming license and become a certified dog trainer. Other than spending time with my animals I spend my time working, and spending time with my boyfriend of 3 years. This English class is only my third class I’ve taken and EVCC and I am still learning how to properly divide my time so that I am not struggling so much.
Over all I thought that the three themes identity, community, and tradition where all good ways to get myself and other students thinking about opening our eyes to other ways of living. From reading the text and watching the movies it helped me not be so close minded when it comes to other peoples religious beliefs and cultural differences from my own person preferences. For example I am not a religious person and I never really considered why other people chose to believe in what they do; but after learning more about others traditions and communities my eyes where opened up to the fact that not everyone lives and was raised the same way I was.
When asked to chose four assignments to use as examples of my work the main ones that stick out to me are the essays. I feel as though they are the assignments that I out the most time and effort into. The first essay’s topic was what is the biggest factor in developing a sense of self- identity. I chose to use the people we surround ourselves with as the biggest influence on ones self-identity. I feel as though I had a good topic, but I just did not have enough body in my paper and I forgot to add direct quotes from the text I read. The second essay the topic was how do communities affect you and the people around you. I chose to write about the tattooed and pierced community. This was my favorite essay to write because, I felt as though I had a good topic and I was passionate about what I chose. But again I failed to add direct quotes and it was lacking a bit in the body. The third essay the topic was how are traditions challenged. I chose to write about Christmas as one of the most challenged traditions. I thought that this would be the paper with a better body but, it turned out I had less to write about it than I thought. Also my quotes were not very good so I don’t think I did very well on that essay either. The fourth assignment I chose to use was the blog posting about different communities. I chose to write about the dog lovers community because I myself am in love with my dog. I was going to use that topic for my essay but I could not come up with enough ideas to fill the paper. Overall I am okay with the work I did in this class. If I was to do it over again I would definitely apply more time to the class.
